ෂර්ලොක් හෝම්ස්ගේ අභියෝගය (Sherlock Holmes's Challenge)

ඇය හිස සැලුවාය.

‘හොඳයි දැන් වොට්සන්, හඩ්සන් මහත්මිය පැවසූ දෙයින් මට විශ්වාසයි ඔබට ඔබේ වර්ණය මට කියන්න පුළුවන්ද?’

නමුත් ඇය කිසිවක් කීවේ නැත හෝම්ස්.

'හරියටම.'

වොට්සන් පැළඳ සිටි තොප්පියේ වර්ණය කුමක්ද?

‘Watson, I want to show one of the basic principles of deduction. Mrs. Hudson, please join us. I have three hats here: two of them are white and one is black. Now both of you close your eyes while I put a hat on each of your heads. I hide the third hat, then you do not know which one it is. Then I want to deduce what color the hat is on your head. '

They did as they were told.

‘Okay Mrs. Hudson, open your eyes. Can you tell me what the hat is on your head? ' 

She shook her head.

‘Well now Watson, what Mrs. Hudson said, I'm sure you can tell me the color of  your hat?'

But she said nothing, Holmes.

'Exactly.'

What color was the hat that Watson was wearing?

Answer: White

Explanation: Watson was wearing a white hat. If he was wearing a black hat, Mrs Hudson would immediately know that it was one of her two white hats. Unbeknownst to her, she saw a white hat on Watson's head.

As you can see from this kind of puzzle, 'no information' demonstrates an interesting principle that can sometimes be deduced from useful observations. There is a well-known example of a true story by Sherlock Holmes. ‘The Adventure of Silver Blaze’. Story investigator Gregory asks Holmes if there is anything he would like to draw his attention to.

Gregory (Scotland Yard detective): Is there anything else you would like to draw my attention to?

Holmes: The dog's curious event of the night.

Gregory: The dog did nothing at night.

Holmes: That's the curious thing.
